Istanbul: Private Airport Transfer

Which Istanbul airport should I use?

Istanbul Airport (IST) is the main hub — better for European side hotels (Sultanahmet, Beyoğlu, Karaköy). Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is the budget airline airport on the Asian side — better if you are staying in Kadıköy or if budget carriers offer significantly cheaper fares. For a first visit staying near the historic sites, choose IST.

Istanbul’s two airports

Istanbul is one of the world’s major aviation hubs. Turkish Airlines is one of the world’s largest airlines by network reach, and Istanbul Airport (IST) functions as its global hub connecting Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) handles the budget airline market.

For travelers planning a trip to Istanbul, the choice of airport affects the logistics of arrival and departure. Here is the honest comparison.

Istanbul Airport (IST): the main hub

Location: European side of Istanbul, approximately 40-50 km northwest of Sultanahmet. Opened in 2019, replacing Atatürk Airport.

Airlines: Turkish Airlines (hub), British Airways, Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, Emirates, Qatar Airways, and virtually every major international carrier. Also domestic Turkish Airlines and other carriers.

Terminal size: One of the world’s largest airport terminals. The main terminal is enormous — walking distances from remote piers to arrivals can be 20-30 minutes.

Facilities: World-class. Multiple lounges (the Turkish Airlines Business Lounge is regularly ranked among the world’s best). Extensive shopping, dining, transit hotels (for long layovers), prayer rooms, showers. The arrival and departure experience is modern and well-organized.

Transfer to city:

  • Metro M11 → city: approximately 35-40 minutes to Gayrettepe, then 20-30 minutes more to Sultanahmet area. Total 70-80 minutes.
  • HAVAIST bus → Taksim: 45-75 minutes (traffic dependent)
  • Taxi → Sultanahmet: 45-70 minutes, approximately 500-800 TRY
  • Private transfer → Sultanahmet: 50-75 minutes, approximately 900-1,500 TRY

Best for: Most international travelers; anyone staying on the European side; first-time Istanbul visitors.

See our IST airport to city center guide.

Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW): the budget side

Location: Asian side of Istanbul, approximately 50 km east of Sultanahmet. A full Bosphorus crossing is required to reach the European historic areas.

Airlines: Pegasus Airlines (hub — Turkey’s main budget carrier), Wizz Air (major presence), Ryanair (limited routes), SunExpress, and other budget/charter carriers. Some mainline carriers also use SAW for certain routes.

Terminal: Smaller and less complex than IST. Easier to navigate. Security queues are generally shorter. Domestic and international in the same complex.

Facilities: Adequate. Standard airport dining and shopping, less extensive than IST. Functional rather than exceptional.

Transfer to European city center:

  • HAVABUS → Kadıköy then ferry → Eminönü: approximately 60-80 minutes total
  • M4 metro → Kadıköy + ferry: approximately 65-80 minutes total
  • Taxi → Sultanahmet (via Bosphorus bridge): 60-90 minutes, approximately 600-1,000 TRY
  • Private transfer: approximately 1,000-1,500 TRY

Best for: Budget travelers with significantly cheaper fares; travelers staying in Kadıköy or on the Asian side; travelers comfortable with the additional transfer complexity.

See our SAW airport to city center guide.

When SAW is worth choosing

Case 1: Significant fare savings. If the SAW flight saves you 60+ USD versus the IST option, and your trip is 5+ days long, the extra transfer time and cost (approximately 15-20 USD round trip in public transport cost) still leaves you ahead.

Case 2: You are staying in Kadıköy. SAW is actually closer to Kadıköy than IST is. The HAVABUS to Kadıköy takes 30-40 minutes; you are essentially at your destination without a European-side crossing.

Case 3: Your departure is via Pegasus from SAW. If you are flying home on Pegasus, you will go to SAW regardless of which airport you arrived at.

When to choose IST over SAW

For first-time visitors: The simpler transfer and proximity to the European historic areas makes IST the right choice unless there is a compelling fare difference.

For short trips (2-3 nights): The transit time difference is proportionally larger for a short trip. Two modes of transport versus three modes adds up more for a 48-hour visit.

For family travel with children or elderly relatives: The simpler IST transfer is easier for groups.

If arriving at an unusual hour: IST has better overnight transit facilities and the metro M11 runs extended hours.

Domestic flights from Istanbul

Both IST and SAW have domestic connections to all major Turkish cities. Key domestic routes from Istanbul relevant to tourists:

Istanbul → Cappadocia:

  • IST → Nevşehir NAV or Kayseri ASR (approximately 1 hour 15 minutes). Both airports serve the Cappadocia region; Nevşehir is closer to Göreme.
  • SAW → Kayseri ASR (Pegasus has this route).

Istanbul → Izmir (for Ephesus/Pamukkale):

  • IST → Izmir ADB (approximately 1 hour)
  • SAW → Izmir ADB (Pegasus)

Istanbul → Antalya:

  • IST → Antalya AYT (approximately 1 hour)
  • SAW → Antalya (Pegasus)

Domestic flights are cheap on Turkish carriers, particularly Pegasus. Booking ahead saves significantly. See our Cappadocia from Istanbul guide and Ephesus from Istanbul guide for the honest logistics of these trips.

The critical clarification on Cappadocia “day trips”

Many searches for “Istanbul to Cappadocia” or “Cappadocia from Istanbul” suggest these are day trips. They are not. Cappadocia is approximately 1h15 by flight from Istanbul. The main reason to visit Cappadocia (hot air balloon at dawn) requires being there the night before the balloon flight. “Day tours by plane” to Cappadocia exist but you spend 4-5 hours in transit for perhaps 3-4 hours on the ground — expensive, exhausting, and a poor way to see one of Turkey’s most extraordinary regions.

The honest approach: add 2 nights in Cappadocia to your Istanbul trip. See our honest day trip reality check.

Domestic connections: planning Cappadocia and Ephesus from Istanbul

Both major Istanbul airports have good domestic connections. For travelers planning a combined Istanbul-Cappadocia or Istanbul-Ephesus trip (which we strongly recommend as multi-night extensions, not day trips), here is the practical routing:

Istanbul → Cappadocia:

  • IST → Nevşehir NAV (Kapadokya Havalimanı): Turkish Airlines and occasionally others, approximately 1h15.
  • IST → Kayseri ASR: Multiple carriers, approximately 1h10. Kayseri is slightly farther from Göreme (about 70-80 km) than Nevşehir (about 35-40 km).
  • SAW → Kayseri: Pegasus Airlines.
  • From either Cappadocia airport, a transfer (shuttle or taxi) to Göreme takes 30-50 minutes.

Flights from Istanbul to Cappadocia run multiple times daily on Turkish Airlines and Pegasus. Book ahead, especially for spring/summer when the balloon season drives demand.

Istanbul → Ephesus/Pamukkale:

  • IST → Izmir ADB: Approximately 1 hour. From Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport, a taxi or shuttle to Selçuk (for Ephesus) takes about 30-40 minutes.
  • IST → Izmir → ground transport to Pamukkale: The route from Izmir to Pamukkale by bus takes approximately 3 hours.

The critical honest note: These are not day trips from Istanbul. The hot air balloon in Cappadocia takes place at dawn; you need to be in Göreme the night before. Ephesus is large and deserves at minimum a half-day on site. Pamukkale requires a full day. Building in 2 nights minimum for Cappadocia and 1-2 nights for Ephesus/Pamukkale makes these extensions properly rewarding rather than exhausting sprints.

See our day trip reality check for the full honest breakdown.

IST Terminal: practical arrival advice

Istanbul Airport is enormous by design — it was built to handle Turkish Airlines’ ambition to be the world’s largest airline by network. The terminal handles over 200 flights per hour at peak periods. This means:

Walking distances are large: From your gate to the immigration hall can be 15-25 minutes if you arrive at a remote pier. Factor this into your planning for tight connections.

Immigration queues in summer: In July and August, passport control at IST can take 30-60 minutes. Arrive at the immigration hall as early as possible after your flight; the queues build quickly as multiple flights discharge simultaneously.

The Turkish Airlines Business Lounge at IST: Repeatedly ranked among the world’s best airport lounges. If you fly business class or have Turkish Airlines Miles and Smiles elite status, this is genuinely exceptional — fresh food stations, spa facilities, sleeping pods, and extensive seating across multiple levels.

Transit hotel: If your layover exceeds 8 hours and you want to sleep, transit hotels are available inside the terminal for an hourly rate.

IST vs. Heathrow/Frankfurt as a hub: For travelers connecting between Europe and Asia, the Middle East, or Africa, Istanbul is a well-established alternative hub. Turkish Airlines’ network covers more countries than any other airline. The transit experience at IST is generally smooth, though the terminal scale can be disorienting on first encounter.

Arriving at SAW: step by step

For travelers arriving at Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) for the first time:

Step 1 — Land and follow “Arrivals” signs: SAW is a single terminal, easy to navigate. Signs are in Turkish and English.

Step 2 — Immigration: Generally faster than IST. EU/Schengen passport holders in the appropriate queue, other passports in the main queue. Allow 10-20 minutes in normal conditions.

Step 3 — Luggage and customs: Standard baggage carousel, green channel for most tourists.

Step 4 — Choose your transport:

  • Turn left out of customs for the M4 metro (follow signs: “Metro”)
  • The HAVABUS counter is directly outside the arrivals exit
  • Taxi queue is outside the main exit

Step 5 — Buy an Istanbulkart: If you do not already have one, the M4 station at SAW has Istanbulkart vending machines. Buy the card (100 TRY) and load 200-300 TRY for your initial needs. Use it on M4 metro, T1 tram, and ferries throughout your stay.

What to know about Turkish domestic flights

Turkey has an extensive domestic aviation network and Pegasus + Turkish Airlines compete aggressively on price for domestic routes. A few specific points for tourists using domestic flights to extend their trip beyond Istanbul:

Booking in advance: Domestic flights from Istanbul to Cappadocia (Kayseri or Nevşehir) and Izmir (for Ephesus) fill up in spring and summer, particularly around weekends. Book 3-6 weeks ahead for good prices and schedule choices.

Luggage allowances: Budget carriers (Pegasus, Wizz Air) charge for checked baggage; verify the allowance when you book. Turkish Airlines typically has a more generous included allowance on domestic routes.

Domestic vs. international terminals: At IST, domestic and international flights generally use the same terminal (subject to change — verify on arrival). At SAW, same single terminal. This simplifies connections.

Domestic flight as a day trip tool: Flying Istanbul to Ankara for a day trip (Atatürk Mausoleum, the Anatolian Civilizations Museum) is theoretically possible — approximately 45-minute flight each way — though Ankara has less tourist appeal than Istanbul. More relevant: using a domestic flight to access Trabzon (Black Sea coast, Sümela Monastery) or Diyarbakır (historic Kurdish city, UNESCO walls) for an extension.

Choosing your Istanbul airport: a decision tree

I am flying Turkish Airlines: Use IST. Turkish Airlines is headquartered at IST.

I am flying Pegasus from a European city: You will likely use SAW. If your Istanbul hotel is on the European side, factor in the extra transfer time.

My hotel is in Sultanahmet or Beyoğlu: IST is the better choice. The M11 metro gives you a predictable 70-80 minute transfer.

My hotel is in Kadıköy: SAW is fine. HAVABUS to Kadıköy is 30-40 minutes and you are close to your hotel without a Bosphorus crossing.

I am connecting to Cappadocia or Izmir: Both airports have domestic connections. At IST, Turkish Airlines has more frequent domestic flights. At SAW, Pegasus has good domestic coverage.

I want the simplest possible arrival: IST. The terminal is larger and more complex to navigate initially, but the transfer options are well-signposted and the metro is direct. SAW is simpler once you understand the HAVABUS + ferry combination, but the multi-mode nature can confuse first-time visitors.

Frequently asked questions about Istanbul airports

Do I need to transit between IST and SAW for a connecting flight?

If your connection involves one flight at IST and the next at SAW (or vice versa), you need to travel between airports by road. Allow 2-3 hours minimum; in heavy traffic, the inter-airport journey can take 90-120 minutes. This kind of split-airport routing is unusual with a single booking; it more commonly affects travelers booking separate flights.

Is Istanbul Airport (IST) safe?

Yes. Istanbul Airport has standard international airport security procedures. The terminal is well-monitored. See our is Istanbul safe guide for the general safety context.

What happens if my flight at SAW is cancelled and I need to get to IST?

The inter-airport journey takes 90-120 minutes by road (taxi or HAVABUS to Taksim, then bus or taxi to IST). Allow at least 2.5 hours for the transfer plus airport check-in. The airlines are required to assist with rebooking on airline cancellations but are not responsible for the inter-airport transfer logistics.

Are there luggage lockers at IST and SAW?

Yes. Left-luggage (emanet) facilities are available at both airports. Useful for travelers on stopovers who want to explore the city without their main bag.

Frequently asked questions about Istanbul airports guide — IST vs SAW, which to choose

What is the difference between IST and SAW?

Istanbul Airport (IST) is the primary international hub on the European side, used by Turkish Airlines and most major carriers, 40-50 km from Sultanahmet. Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is on the Asian side, used by budget carriers (Pegasus, Wizz Air), approximately 50 km from Sultanahmet but with a Bosphorus crossing involved.

Is SAW cheaper than IST for flights?

Often yes — budget carriers using SAW frequently offer lower fares than IST routes. The fare difference needs to be weighed against the extra transfer time and complexity. A 30-60 USD fare saving with an extra 45 minutes each way may or may not be worth it depending on your trip length and priorities.

Which airport do Turkish Airlines use?

Turkish Airlines' main hub is Istanbul Airport (IST). Pegasus Airlines (the main Turkish LCC) is primarily based at Sabiha Gökçen (SAW).

Are there domestic flights between IST and the rest of Turkey?

Yes. Both IST and SAW have domestic terminals with flights to Ankara, Izmir, Antalya, Kayseri (for Cappadocia), Nevşehir (for Cappadocia), Bodrum, and many other Turkish cities. Turkish Airlines and Pegasus serve domestic routes from both airports.

What is the third Istanbul airport?

There is no significant third airport currently. The old Atatürk Airport (AHL) closed in 2019. Some general aviation and cargo use a small airfield, but the two passenger airports are IST and SAW.

How far apart are IST and SAW?

IST and SAW are approximately 90-100 km apart by road (via the Bosphorus bridge). Getting from one to the other takes 90-120 minutes depending on traffic. If you need to transfer between Istanbul's airports for a connecting flight, allow a full 2-3 hours.
